2026 Write for Rights Family Guide | Pre-register Now
This Christmas and Lunar New Year, why not write a letter together with your children?
How can we explain human rights to children? When someone loses their freedom for speaking their mind or standing up for the rights of others, how can we talk to our children about what has happened?
This year, Amnesty International Hong Kong Overseas has put together a special Write for Rights family guide for Hong Kong families. Through simple stories, conversations, drawing and letter-writing activities, the guide helps parents introduce their children to human rights and explore what is happening around the world.
Whether you plan to take part at home with your children or bring several families together for a letter-writing activity during Christmas, New Year or Lunar New Year, the guide is designed to help parents, including those new to human rights education, lead activities at their own pace.
Children may not understand every complex issue, but they can begin by learning to care about others, listen, ask questions and express their thoughts through words and drawings.
A letter or a drawing can be a starting point.
What’s Inside the Family Guide
1. Exploring Human Rights Together
Introduce children to concepts such as human rights, freedom and fairness in age-appropriate language. The guide helps parents start conversations through everyday experiences and situations familiar to their children.
2. Discovering the Stories Behind Write for Rights
Through simplified case stories, parents can help children learn about the people featured in this year’s Write for Rights campaign, understand their experiences and explore why letters and messages of solidarity from around the world matter.
The guide also includes discussion questions to help parents and children reflect and talk together.
3. Drawing and Writing Letters Together
The guide includes child-friendly colouring sheets, letter paper templates and simple activity materials.
Children can draw a picture, write a few words or ask a parent to help put their thoughts into writing. Letters do not have to be long, and there are no right or wrong answers.
4. Guidance for Parents
Not sure where to begin? The guide provides simple step-by-step instructions and practical suggestions to help parents organise activities suited to their children’s interests and level of understanding.
It also offers guidance on responding to children’s questions and being mindful of their emotions and safety when discussing sensitive or difficult topics.
5. How to Submit Your Letters
Once you have finished writing or drawing, the guide will walk you through the online letter submission process, including important safety considerations when uploading your letters.
